Vinnie live @ Yoshis

Hey Zak, Hey Canarsie!!

Okie dokie!! Got the plane tics, hotel res, and the gig tics for the second show Sat night. Me and the misses will be in town around 10pm Fri. So we'll probably decompress on Sat and do some sight seeing.

Called Yoshi's..... and they confirmed the fact about putting a little note on a seat to reserve for the 1st show, but in order to save seats for the second show, they said you need to have dinner there or wait in line and take your chances. Does anyone want to meet at Yoshi's for dinner for the second set?? Me, my finace' and drumaddix will be there for dinner. How about it Zak and Canarsie??

I'll post the hotel I'll be staying at. Plus I'll have a rent a car if anyone needs taxi service.

We'll be having dinner at Yoshis, so I guess well be getting there around 8pm??

All right... so it's the morning after.

It was really fun meeting JoesMechanic and drumaddix over dinner for some good drum conversation. We'll for sure do it again sometime down the road.

Okay... so the band was killing! This instrumentation made for some really interesting sounding music; I'll for sure check out the album when it is released in September. The band had such a strong positive chemistry going on stage. Vinnie was smiling ear to ear while playing. The thing about seeing Vinnie play live is not so much about what he plays but witnessing the spirit in which he plays in the moment. It is so positive and infectious. Awesome awesome awesome!!!

But then disaster struck...

In the last tune as all the musicians were taking their final solos Vinnie's turn comes (last up btw). All music stops and Vinnie points to some dude in the front row yelling "turn off that camera, turn off that camera!!" The guy does and Vinnie gives him a sarcastic "thank you." Then Vinnie basically rips everyone?s heads off with a blistering solo; you could tell he was playing pissed off for sure. The band finishes the tune and Vinnie throws down his sticks and towel and leaves the stage. There wasn't going to be any encores tonight.

As negative as that experience was, seeing Vinnie's motivation basically being broken right in front of us, it was an educational experience. It really showed me how special and fragile the experience of watching these legendary players do their art can be. The moment should be cherished by those blessed to be there and not trivialized by attempts to capture it on video; especially when requests by the venue and artists have been made before hand.

If Vinnie happens to read this I'd like to say to him that many of us that were Yoshis on that Saturday night were honored by the presence of your music, your playing, and your spirit. We were sending you positive thoughts while this unfortunate event happened.

There was the chance that we were going to meet Vinnie because JoesMechanic knows him. I thought for sure Vinnie wouldn't be greeting people afterward. We hung for a little bit and the rest of the band was out talking to people but no Vinnie. I decided it was time for me to leave. I had played a gig in San Francisco the night before until 3am and had a 6am wake up call for a church gig Sunday morning; I needed some sleep. It turned out that Vinnie did come out and JoesMechanic and drumaddix got to spend some time with him. I'm happy that they did and I hope Vinnie felt better.

JoesMechanic (John) took some pictures during the evening so I'm sure those will be up soon.

I'd also like to thank Steve for providing us with this forum. It's a beautiful thing when complete strangers from across the globe can meet up for these hangs.

I look forward to the next San Francisco HOD hang.

Wow. Well if the gentlemen with the camera has real appreciation for Vinnie's playing or him as a person for that matter, I am sure he learnt a lesson. I am surprised Vinnie still played a great solo after that interruption - the way you described it, things seemed to get pretty serious. How did the rest of the audience react?

For VC to have stormed off as a result would have been unprofessional, prob why he didn't. But the guy did comply, so... just some real life goin' down b4-your-eyes for ya's. You probably may have received a better solo than would've been [him mad], if THAT'S possible... [img]wink.gif[/img]

You see, it's 1 thing to have instructional drum stuff recorded for your own personal use, but VC & cohorts have to worry about entire show bootlegging for profit...where have we heard that b4?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Basically the whole room went silent for a while but then cheers of support went Vinnie's way during his solo. It was so obvious that Vinnie was pissed and that the music had been compromised so I think people in the crowd were trying to bring him back up. Since it happened during the last song there just wasn't enough time left for the vibe to recover.
